    Rastrelli Cello Quartet

“These four players showed some of the best qualities of the venerated Russian cello tradition, namely lustrous tone combined with soulful expression”

A singularly unique ensemble, the Rastrelli Cello Quartet has been thrilling audiences with their renderings of non-traditional programming since 2002. Kira Kraftzoff, Kirill Timofeev, Misha Degtjareff and Sergio Drabkine formed the ensemble with a mission to perform music “between the genres,” and their widely varied programs mix works by Bach, Frescobaldi and Dvorak with that of George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and Chick Corea. The name of the Quartet is taken from the eighteenth-century architect Bartholomew Rastrelli, who designed the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the home city of three of the four Quartet members.

The Rastrelli have performed in many of Europe’s great concert halls, including the Gasteig in Munich, St. Petersburg’s Philharmonic Hall, Bulgaria Hall Sofia, the Liederhalle Stuttgart and Philharmonic Hall in Minsk.

    Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev based on Shakespeare’s tragic love story. Prokofiev composed the music in 1935 or 1936 for the Kirov Ballet. The incredible ballet score has inspired many great choreographers to try their hand at Shakespeare’s story.

Romeo and Juliet ballet will feature the preface ballet Chopinana which grew out of Chopin’s Seventh Waltz and had its premiere on February 23, 1907. The favorite oeuvre of its creator, Mikhail Fokine, this work has now become standard repertoire for many of the world’s leading theatres.

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world.

    BYU International Folk Dance

With a beautiful array of ethnic costumes, the International Folk Dance Ensemble presents a concert program of dances from more than a dozen nations, including Ukraine, Russia, Korea, Poland, Mexico, and the United States.

Since 1964 the ensemble has represented the United States and American culture at folk dance festivals throughout the world, including the festival held in conjunction with the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the festivals in Haifa, Israel; Confolens, France; and Billingham, England. In addition, the group regularly presents its international repertoire throughout the United States and Canada. Regardless of focus–international or American–the BYU Folk Dance Ensemble is acclaimed by thousands for their skillful dancing and energy.

“The performance ‘blew our socks off’-nearly two hours of solid, continuous entertainment from a group of 36 performers who are a credit to not only themselves but to BYU. I sat next to a prominent Aboriginal indigenous leader in one of the matinees. He slapped his thighs , yahoo’d, said ‘awesome’ about 20 times and brought his entire family to the following evening performance. He then. . . presented the group with aboriginal-made gifts-the same spirit affected everyone who attended.”
    –Phil Baker, Perth, Australia

“No one in the audience could have known—from quality, precision, and standards of your troupe—that they were, in fact, an ensemble of college students. As noted by one of our guests, ‘they put a smile back on my face…please bring them back!”

–Jonathon Rice, Cultural Attaché, U.S. Embassy, Amman, Jordan
